Founded in 2005 by Kimberly Stufflet and Thomas Aderhold, Preferred Aviation Underwriters (PAU) was created to serve a unique niche in the aviation insurance market. Rather than insuring aircraft, PAU focused on everything else on the airport tarmac—buildings, tugs, lab carts, and more—providing specialized property and casualty coverage.
The Challenge of Sustaining Growth
As PAU grew from a startup to a thriving business with $88 million in revenue and 23 employees, the founders faced a critical decision: how to ensure the company’s long-term success and take care of their close-knit team.
“We were looking for a perpetuation plan, number one. Number two, we want to take care of our employees who had been with us,” says Stufflet.
Finding the Right Partner
PAU’s leadership sought a partner who shared their values and vision. After careful due diligence and conversations with multiple potential acquirers, they chose DOXA for its cultural alignment and commitment to people.
“At the end of the day, it wasn’t about [the money]. It was more about, how are we going to keep this corporation going? How are we going to take care of our employees? And can we find somebody that we really feel they’re going to make us feel like family and have the same values?” Stufflet explains.
Results That Speak for Themselves
Since joining DOXA, PAU has continued to thrive. The transition has been smooth, with DOXA honoring the promises made during the acquisition process. For Stufflet, the experience has confirmed that the decision was the right one.
“They mean what they say, and they follow through. So, I’m just so happy,” she reflects.
The partnership has allowed PAU to maintain its culture, support its employees, and continue its mission of serving a unique and vital niche in the aviation industry—all while gaining the backing of a larger organization.
